During a fourth round of negotiations held from 6 to 9 June 2017 in Mexico City, delegations from the four EFTA States and Mexico continued their negotiations on a review of their Free Trade Agreement.
Delegations continued their work on the basis of the results achieved in the third round, and on the follow-ups and exchanges that had taken place in the intersessional period. Talks focused on outstanding areas such as trade in goods, rules of origin and trade facilitation, trade in services, investment, government procurement, technical barriers to trade (TBT) and sanitary and phytosanitary measures (SPS), cooperation, regulatory coherence and legal and horizontal matters. Good progress was made in most areas discussed.
Chief negotiators also addressed a number of topics with the aim of identifying a way forward on outstanding issues. The two sides decided to confirm a date for the next round of discussions at a later stage.
The EFTA delegation was headed by Ms Karin Büchel, Minister and Head of Free Trade Agreements at the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs of Switzerland, while Mr César Guerra Guerrero, Minister Representative of the Ministry of Economy to the EU, headed the Mexican delegation.
